Do you share video files with others on the Internet? If you do, you’re taking up a huge hunk of bandwidth, which can cause degraded service for other customers. As a result, Internet providers, such as Comcast, may be blocking or slowing down Internet traffic of some customers—a practice referred to as network management. However, if a recent Federal Communications Commission ruling stands, these practices will stop. In 2008, the FCC ruled that Comcast wrongly blocked video file sharing activities of customers, violating the agency’s Net neutrality principle. This principle holds that consumers should have unfettered access to the Internet. But the reality is that some consumers use an inordinate amount of bandwidth. Some cable and phone companies are experimenting with “Internet metering”—making customers pay for the amount of bandwidth used.
