A possible contributor to rising health care costs in the United States is obesity, which is currently determined using a formula called body mass index (BMI). This index is calculated using the following formula:

A person with a BMI of 25 to 29 is classified as overweight, 30 to 40 as obese, and 40 or more as morbidly obese. A random sample of individuals was selected from Michigan, Florida, Utah, and New York, and their BMI measurements were taken. The gender of each person was also noted. These data can be found in the file BMI by state. xlsx.

a. Using α = 0.05, is there significant interaction between the gender and the state?

b. Using a two way ANOVA and α = 0.05, does the state in which the person resides have an effect on his or her BMI level?
