Prior to the 2008 election, the Quinnipiac University Poll asked a sample of U.S. residents, "If Barack Obama is elected President, do you think the economy will get better, get worse or stay about the same?" This problem is based on the results of that poll. Independent simple random samples of 500 residents each in red (predominantly Republican), blue (predominantly Democratic), and purple (mixed) states responded to the aforementioned question as follows.
