forecasting lost sales

Project Description:

the calway department store suffered heavy damage when the category 2 tropical cyclone hit central coast in august 2014. the store was closed for four months from september 2014 to december 2014 and calway management is now involved in a dispute with its insurance company concerning the amount of lost sales during the time the store was closed. two key issues must be resolved: (1) the lost sales during the time the store was closed; and (2) whether calway is entitled to any compensation for excess sales from increased business activity after the cyclone. more than $8 billion in federal disaster relief and insurance money came into the affected areas, resulting in increased sales at department stores and numerous other businesses.

table 1 shows the sales data for the 48 months preceding the cyclone. table 2 reports total sales for the 48 months preceding the cyclone for all department stores in the state, as well as the total sales in the state for the four months when calway was closed. management asks you to analyse these data and develop estimates of the lost sales at the calway department store for the months of september through december 2014. management also wants to determine whether a case can be made for excess cyclone-related sales during the same period. if such a case can be made, calway is entitled to compensation for excess sales it would have earned in addition to ordinary sales.

tables are attached.
your task is to perform an analysis on the data using excel and develop estimates of the lost sales at the calway department store for the months of september to december 2014. this is to determine whether or not a case can be made for excess cyclone-related sales (to claim for entitlement through insurance).
attempt (2.1) to (2.4)
(2.1) produce an estimate of sales had there been no cyclone.
(2.2) produce an estimate of state wide department store had there been no cyclone.

(2.3) produce an estimate of lost sales for the calway department store for september through december 2014.
(2.4) determine the lost sales for each period (of september through december 2014) and the total lost sales during this period. the lost figure will be used as a basis to claim for entitlement through insurance company.
