reading analysis

Project Description:

after completing the assigned readings ("black cat," the tell-tale heart," "a rose for emily," and the intro to the gothic), compose at least a 2-page, double-spaced response about your interpretation of the short stories and selected introductory information. (note: please make sure you meet the length requirement. do not include the prompt in your response; additionally, your heading information does not count toward the response length.)

here are some questions to consider:

how did each story make you feel? what stood out to you about each story? what was the main point of each? what were some memorable lines from each story? were there any significant events or themes that made you think about experiences you've had? what elements of the gothic were present? absent? were the physical events in the stories the scariest parts, or were the psychological ramifications scarier? what imagery or figures from each story held particular significance or added to the scariness? do you think that we have become jaded in terms of what's "scary?" for instance, do you think these stories were more frightening to readers in years past as opposed to contemporary readers? do these stories offer us any insight to the human condition and the concept of fear? give specific examples to support your thoughts.

bring a draft, copy, summary, or notes of your response to class, as it will be used during discussion. additionally, everyone should have at least one question or comment about the story to contribute to discussion.
