technology/media/culture

Project Description:

content instructions: choose one of the following options

option one: technology

identify a technological invention or change that had a significant impact.
focus on something specific; don’t summarize the history of a medium.
for example: the invention of the cd, not all audio recording
2. explain the impact that invention or change had on the media industry.

for example: for one thing, cd’s allowed music to be recorded and played back at greater clarity and sturdiness than cassette tapes
cite our textbook, mix it up, at least once in your explanation of its impact.
use and cite at least one source from our library’s database holdings (such as ebscohost or lexis/nexis, etc.) in your explanation of its impact. a regular internet source will not meet this requirement.
3. discuss why, how, or in what way(s) this invention or change was significant to the culture.

(for example: cd’s helped get people ready for a digital environment.)
or:

option two: milestone/touchstone event

identify a popular culture event that qualifies as a media milestone/touchstone.
for example: orson welles’ “war of the worlds” broadcast
2. explain why that event qualifies as a media milestone or touchstone2.

for example: “war of the worlds” demonstrated the emotional impact of radio and radio’s effect on information sharing
cite our textbook, mix it up, at least once in your explanation of its qualifications.
use and cite at least one source from our library’s database holdings (such as ebscohost or lexis/nexis, etc.) in your explanation of its qualifications. a regular internet source will not meet this requirement
3. discuss why, how, or in what way(s) this media milestone/touchstone was significant to the culture.

for example: people became more aware of radio’s powerful influence, which led to its increased use for a number of other means---news, politics, advertising, and so on.
formatting instructions: you may submit your task as either an essay or a narrated keynote, but you are strongly urged to submit a keynote. a regular non-narrated keynote is not an option. be sure to address the content requested – design is no substitute for content!

if you choose to submit an essay:

it must total of 3 – 4 full pages of text (not including the references page).
it must include a references page that lists all sources used, in apa style.
it must be set in 12-point font.
it must be double-spaced, and set with 1” page margins.
if you choose to submit a keynote:

it must include a narration track.
for instructions, open keynote, click "help" on the upper right, and then type "narration" in the search field.
it takes about 3 steps to record narration – simple!
don't worry about stumbling over your words, that is fine! this does not need to be broadcast quality.
it must be 3 and a half to 6 minutes in length.
it must include a slide formatted as an apa-style references page at the end.
