Some people contend that the majority of Americans realize that they subsidize farmers through various government programs, but they don’t mind doing so because they know they are preserving a certain way of life. This argument assumes that the United States wouldn’t be the same—would in some way be diminished—without family farms and that preserving them is worth paying higher taxes and prices.
