The air traffic controllers, employees of the Federal Aviation Administration, went on strike. The controller’s union, the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization, demanded that the controllers be removed from the civil service designation that prohibited them from striking. They argued that prohibition of the right to strike was a violation of a fundamental civil liberty. A federal district court ruled that government employees did not have the right to strike because Congress had not given them such a right. The controllers persisted in their strike. As a result, all striking controllers were fired, and the union was fined $100,000 an hour for the duration of the strike. The union was subsequently decertified, removing its rights to bargain on behalf of the controllers.
