Empowerment is having the power and authority to make decisions. For this project, the teacher steps back and allows the class to plan and carry out a day of classes. The students might appoint a leader and divide into teams (to plan a lecture, decide on an assignment, plana field trip, and other activities). It’s completely up to the students how they organize and carry out the day’s classes. In the next class, discuss the experience—including any upsides and downsides of empowerment.
