A university professor who has conducted research for many years submitted a grant to the NIH to request funding to integrate a Spanish-language video about hospice care in the discharge planning processes for a number of hospitals surrounding the university. The grant application, which was very prescriptive, detailed, and time-consuming, was scored and returned (not funded).

The professor, who is the principal investigator, saw the value of conducting a small-scale feasibility study in one hospital with the intent to use those results to leverage another NIH grant application. The Spanish-language hospice video would be incorporated into the palliative care process, whereby Latino patients with palliative care and end-of-life needs would be triaged to watch the video with their family before discharge and prior to an order being written for hospice services. Data would be gathered before and after the video is watched, the results analyzed, and a feasibility index calculated. He engages a DNP as Co-I who will assist with the feasibility project design and execution, prepare the project for presentation to the IRB, guide the palliative care NP and social worker, and, in general, act as liaison to the hospital.
