Question:

1. What can Connor do to ensure that department-specific training occurs in the hotel?
2. How might inexpensive and cost-effective training materials be secured or developed?
3. What can be done with department heads who maintain that they have neither the time nor the funds needed to undertake training efforts?

Connor Casey, the hotel’s GM, was having lunch with the HR director in the hotel’s dining room.
“I’ve got some possible budget problems,” the director said. “Remember our pep talk at last month’s executive operating committee meeting? The one where we all agreed that we needed to do more staff training?”
“Yes,” agreed Connor, “I recall the meeting.”
“I’ve had the department heads from food and beverage, housekeeping, and the front office visit me since then to request help in finding some training materials for their entry-level staff, and they are asking my department to pay for it. You know there’s not much in the budget for the purchase of materials from external suppliers.”
“I do know that,” Connor responded, “but I also know that failure to train our staff will cost those departments more money than will training them.”
Connor and the HR director flinched a bit as they heard a drinking glass and several plates break with a loud, shattering sound.
“I hope no one got hurt,” said Connor while quickly rising from the table and moving toward the sound of the broken dishes.
