Earth Watch Institute (www.earthwatch.org) is a nonprofit that sends volunteers to science-based conservation and cultural projects in fi fly-five countries to protect threatened habits, species, and cultures. Expeditions are two-week contributions of participants ’ time, money support, and spirit to professional, peer-reviewed scientific research. Research priorities are based on climate change, endangered species and resources, marine biology and ocean conservation, and threatened traditional cultures. Participants contribute to their room and board, research permits, scientific equipment, off-site staff to coordinate logistics and safety, carbon offsets to neutralize the researchers ’ footprints, and more. Part of the contribution may be tax deductible.  Some of the excursions were to Africa, Australia, Central America and the Caribbean, Europe, South America, and North America. One of the excursions to Africa had Earth watch teams mapping locations, movements, and associations of two zebra species in Northern Kenya’s Samburu region. Other volunteer opportunities include Culinary Corps (culinary corps .org), where chefs and other professional foodies help underserved communities creating menus for people with HIV or participating in an after-school cooking program; Help X (helpx.net) lets you trade your time for room and board at farms, ranches, or hostels or on sailboats; and WWOOF-USA (woofusa.org) is an organic farming movement that swaps work for meals and accommodations. The location may be an Idaho bakery, a Vermont dairy farm, or a lavender farm in North Carolina.
