(a) A Kotani plot for the t_2g¹ configuration consists of a curve similar to that in Fig. 20.29, but levelling off at μ_eff ≈ 1:8 μ_B when kT/λ ≈ 1:0. Suggest two metal ions that you might expect to possess room temperature values of μ_eff

(i) On the near horizontal part of the curve 

(ii) On the steepest part of the curve with μ_effeff to be affected by an increase in temperature?

(b) Classify the following ligands as being σ-donor only, π-donor and π-acceptor: F⁻, CO and NH₃. For each ligand, state what orbitals are involved in σ- or π-bond formation with the metal ion in an octahedral complex. Give diagrams to illustrate the overlap between appropriate metal orbitals and ligand group orbitals.
