Council’s green strategy no longer a key area of failure

A South Australian council has overhauled its carbon reduction strategy and will install software from TechnologyOne to improve its reporting capability. Campbelltown City council in Adelaide devised its strategy almost a decade ago but struggled to achieve its goals because it could not properly access data about emissions. In anticipation of federal government regulation of the national greenhouse reporting initiative, it will replace the web-based spreadsheet application to record emissions data.

‘We’ve set targets and tried to do efficiency improvements but we haven’t had the systems in place to let us track that. Even though we’re doing the data-entry side, we haven’t had a reporting platform that allows us to see that data easily and simply.’

The council is now using TechnologyOne financials and payroll systems to capture data about electricity, fuel and gas use, and waste output. It will install the enterprise budgeting and business intelligence modules to collate this information, apply the relevant formulas to calculate its emissions, and present the information in a meaningful way.

TechnologyOne’s software allows reports to be published internally, Ms Sarac said. ‘The other ones we looked at tended to be more externally based. They would take our data and manipulate it offsite and provide a report back to us . TechOne allows us to keep that internal control.’

She said the system gave specific information about the council’s widely distributed operations. ‘It makes for far more consistency in reporting,’ she said. ‘We can pool those and get a good picture at the large scale across the organisation on what’s going on in any given year.’

Required

Explain how a system like TechnologyOne’s software is likely to be integrated into the traditional budgeting system of the Campbelltown Council and how budgeting would assist in the reduction of greenhouse emissions.
