Marianne is the only woman auditor on Granville Company’s internal auditing staff. She joined the staff approximately six months ago after having worked as an assistant controller for N.C. Hill Manufacturing, Inc. Ever since Marianne came to Granville, she has appeared very nervous on the job. When she makes a mistake, regardless of how small or large it may be, she apologizes to almost everyone in sight — the auditee, her supervisor, the other staff auditors — and when she leaves at the end of the day, she apologizes again for the various mistakes she has made, and she promises to do better the following day. Marianne recently started smoking, she says, to try to lose some of the extra weight she has picked up since taking the position with Granville. Her senior auditor overheard her telling a clerk on the auditee’s staff that her father is very ill and isn’t expected to live more than another month. Marianne is afraid that if she loses this job she may have to move away to find another job, leaving her mother by herself.
