Question:

You have recently been hired by a large firm and after a major promotion have just completed your first sales budget by yourself. You and your best friend set a date to go out and celebrate on Friday. The following conversation takes place: Friend: You look a little down. I thought this was supposed to be a celebration. You: I think I made a mistake with the budget. I checked the numbers again and I think I doubled the expected sales from our overseas branch, resulting in a 50 percent increase in overall budgeted sales. Friend: Are you sure? Maybe you miscalculated something else. You: I’m sure. I checked and rechecked the numbers. I just messed it up completely. Friend: Well maybe demand will pick up overseas and your budget will be met naturally. I wouldn’t panic about something like this; after all, it’s just a budget. It’s not like you were preparing the actual financial statements. Why raise an issue now when everything might just work itself out? I would just sit tight and let things play out. What are you going to do on Monday?
