Question:

In self-selecting groups of three or four, each select an example of a job in your own organisation or some other organisation of your choice (you may find it easiest to use your own organisation, if possible). You should each draw up a list of the main duties of the chosen job and of the technical equipment that is available to assist in undertaking this job. Taking each job in turn, you should collectively discuss:

1. Which aspects of your chosen job do you think could, or should, be further automated, and why?

2. Which aspects of the job cannot, or should not, be further automated, and why?

3. How would the nature of the job change if your suggestions were followed? Would the job become more or less fulfilling for the occupant?

For the aspects you have discussed in the first two questions above, do you think senior managers would come to the same conclusions as yourselves, taking into account factors such as costs, product and service quality?
