Question:

Knowing what you do now about influence and politics, there is always an opportunity for you to use this to your own advantage in a manner that is not advantageous for others. Some people manipulate others through their influencing tactics, impression management and ensuring that they manage up. But what if these are used in a manner that is duplicitous, where those in positions of power only see what is good while everyone else is experiencing this person at their worst? You may suspect that eventually this person will be ‘found out’ but often these people are good at reading situations and move between organisations frequently. As a co-worker it can be difficult. However, you can use your new-found skills to help uncover such unethical actions. With power and influence come great responsibility; that is, to treat others with respect (often referred to as Kant’s ‘golden rule’ of doing unto others as you would have done to yourself), consideration and without harm. Acting ethically with your informed knowledge of power, influence, impression management and ability to manage up is good for everyone, including yourself.
