Aniline has a UV spectrum with peaks at λ_max 5 230 nm (ϵ = 8600) and 280 nm (ϵ = 1430). In the presence of dilute HCl, the spectrum of aniline changes dramatically: λ_max 5 203 (ϵ = 7500) and 254 (ϵ = 160). This spectrum is nearly identical to the UV spectrum of benzene.
