Question:
Review the stressors described in the chapter. Which stressors play the biggest role in your life now? Which stressors do you expect to play big roles in the future?
Stressors
Stressors are the antecedents of stress. They occur in work experiences, nonwork experiences, and various life transitions. As a person’s perceptual processes filter the stressors, a stress response results. If the person perceives a stressor as excessively demanding or as a harmful constraint, distress results. If the person perceives a stressor as a challenge or an exciting opportunity, eustress results. Both distress and eustress have the different results shown in Figure 16.1. Work stressors include deadlines, work overload, shift work, job security, political behavior, and the physical environment. Nonwork stressors include financial problems, relocation, and dual careers. Life transition stressors include the death of a loved one, divorce, or children leaving home.
