Task 3 – Whose job? Discover which person has which job. Betty, Tom, Edward, Sid, and Dave comprise the employees of the firm and fill the jobs of clerk, administrator, manager, accountant, and surveyor, but not in that order. Read the information below to determine which person holds which job. Use the grid below as a bingo card, eliminating individuals, as you go. The administrator bandaged the surveyor’s finger when he cut it. While the manager and the surveyor were away from the office, the accountant docked their subordinates – Dave and Sid – a half day’s pay each, for taking the afternoon off. The accountant is a fine bridge player, and Tom admires his ability. Dave invited the administrator for lunch but his invitation was not accepted.

Task 4 – Motoring advice. Suggest the best route between your educational establishment and the nearest coastal town or city.


(a) Form groups.

(b) Nominate a group observer to sit silently near the group and make a note of how the group went about its task; which people played which roles; how decisions were made; and how leadership was exercised.

(c) You have 15–20 minutes to complete four tasks which vary in their nature.

(d) The tasks are:

Task 1 – Rhyming words

Task 2 – Word equations

Task 3 – Whose job?

Task 4 – Motoring advice.

(e) Group observers provide feedback to their groups.

(f) Instructor explains the difference between different tasks and supplies solutions. (g) Groups compare their answers and are provided with the correct answers.

(h) All the groups then

• Identify the unique characteristics of each type of task they performed 

• Provide other examples of each type of task in social or work life 

• Consider the effect of task type on group aspects such as choice of members, ways of working, and methods of decision-making.
