Make a table with three columns: device (examples: Mac computer, Windows, Apple Watch, Android Phone, etc.), feature (photo access, camera and mic access, data tracking, location tracking, etc.), and service (websites, apps, etc.). Build out the table listing permissions you are asked to approve (or not) when performing tasks on various devices and services. Work with classmates to identify when opt-in versus opt-out options are offered. As a group or class, discuss whether the approaches satisfy the needs of consumers and firms. Do these conflict? If so, why? Take screenshots of any permission screens you think are especially effective, or evidence of tactics that you later found concerning (if you don’t know how to take a screenshot on your computer or device, just search online for instructions). Be prepared to share your screenshots and other examples with your instructor for class discussion.
