As a leader or manager in the public sector there will come times when you are faced
Question:
As a leader or manager in the public sector there will come times when you are faced with ethical decisions that you must make. Imagine that you are the duty chief working on Super Bowl Sunday for a local emergency service agency of your choice (OEM, EMS, Fire department, Police Department , ETC). You have had several employees attempt to take vacation time for the day, but were denied due to lack of coverage. One of these employees calls out sick at 1300 hours for their 1600-hour shift, which is within the allotted time frame to call out sick (within 2 hours of the start of the shift). After you exhaust all resources trying to cover that employees shift you have no choice but to mandate an employee from the 0800-1600 tour. Your shift is over at 1800 hours and you attend a local sports bar to watch the big game. After sitting at your table for a little while you notice the same employee who was denied vacation time and subsequently called out sick sitting at the bar with friends laughing and cheering for his favorite team. At this point what are your ethical thoughts and concerns? What do you do in this situation and why? Do you notify him on the spot that he is busted and will be reprimanded? How would you handle this situation?
