Companies that are listed on a stock exchange, such as the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), must make annual disclosures of financial and other information in accordance with securities legislation. These documents are available to the public, either on the company’s own website or on the System for Electronic Document Analysis and Retrieval (SEDAR) website (www.sedar.com).

With the class divided into groups, each group should pick one company that is listed on the TSX in one of the following sectors and download the relevant financial information:
• Energy, oil, and gas
• Financial services
• Manufacturing
• Real estate
• Retail
• Telecommunications
Answer the following questions:
(a) What does the company do?
(b) In which countries other than Canada, if any, does the company operate?
(c) Is your company subject to regulation, either federally or provincially?
(d) Does your company pay a dividend? If so, how much was paid per share to the common shareholders in the last year?
(e) Calculate or find the following ratios for the most recent year:
(1) Current ratio
(2) Debt to total assets,
(3) Earnings per share,
(4) Price-earnings ratio.
(f) As a group, discuss whether this is a company you would like to work for and/or invest in.
