“Many religions have similar understanding of the afterlife. If you follow the faithful path then you will be rewarded with a paradise existence/afterlife but if you have strayed from the path then a hell like existence is waiting for you. Hinduism believes that during the time of death you get judged and that is when it is decided where you go. There are 14 different realms 7 which are lower than our existence, 6 that are higher and then our existence which is in the middle if the two. The highest 3 realms are essentially heaven and the lowest worlds are hell. Hinduism believes in reincarnation and depending on the life you have lived depends on which realm you are placed in, it can also have other factors including mental state during time of death. The understanding that you must follow a religious path in oder to reach the higher realms and you follow the laws of karma to lead a better life. If you have lead a sinful life then the lower realm is where you are send where sinners are punished. Everyone in the world wants to live in a paradise and no one in their right mind would want to live in hellish existence which is what motivates Hinduism followers to stay on a righteous path.
Protestants believe that life is a journey to decide how your afterlife will be spent. If you follow the path of the Lord then you will bask in his glory and see your loved ones for eternity. Hell is a place where all the sinners go and they will burn in a fiery lake and be punished for all of eternity. This religion focuses on what path you should follow and how to live in order to be invited into the kingdom of the Lord. Like with many religions many people want to live a righteous life in order to be rewarded in the end and they are afraid of what will happen if they go to hell. Protestants use the focus of a joyful promise land in the end to encourage followers to live a better life.
The Orthodox Judaism, Islam, and Christianity religion believe in the idea of a Day of Judgment in the views of salvation. In the Day of Judgment, reckoning will occur; evil will be punished and good rewarded. The belief is that upon death, the soul does not enter into God’s presence, or alternatively into Hell, but instead at the end of time after the resurrection of the dead upon Judgment. This illustrates two ideas, one being the soul leaves the body and inherits it’s eternal reward, and the other believes that the resurrection means the entire persons death, and the eternal life will be made by the power of God for rewards or punishment (Cunningham, &Kelsay, 2013).
In all of three of the religions, great fear is instilled in people upon the thought of judgment. The belief is that we will all have to account our deeds face-to-face with God. Another idea is that hope is inspired by the thought of judgment because according to Qur’an and biblical traditions, forgiveness is a reality because God is merciful. We are all encouraged to reform our behavior and seek good moral conduct to gain rewards, and avoid punishment (Cunningham, &Kelsay, 2013).
Individual salvation can have an emphasis on the search for meaning in life, the desire to be remembered, and needing a sense of accomplishment.
For some this could be trying to answer the question "why am I here" and "what is my purpose while here on earth". For others it can be creating a "bucket list" of things that the person wants to complete before they die to give a sense of accomplishment or the sense that they have lived a "full life", and for others it is a desire to be remembered.
The impulse to be remembered is all around us. People leave money to charities, hospitals, parks, schools, and buildings, often "in memory of ______" as a way of keeping that persons memory alive. Even inscriptions on grave stones are a way of keeping a person’s memory alive and a place to "visit".
Growing up in a Catholic home, we were to live according to God's plan and by the 10 commandments in order to pass the gates of Heaven on Judgment Day. This day is when you die and meet with God to atone for your sins and your good deeds were acknowledged and rewarded and your sins were punished. This was a way of instilling fear in thinking that anything that you might do would ensure you were sent to Hell.”
