Question:
1. The cultural identity of the individual- what's interesting about cultural identity is it illustrates the differences in sexuality, gender, and religion. Taking the time to learn about a person's culture can help us discover much more internal information about that individual. Cultures help indicate health conditions and potential past family health concerns. Understanding where we originated from, and our family history can help us live healthier and more productive lives. The only critique I would have about cultural identity would be, at times, some people associate our culture with our personal values. Just because our culture highlights certain aspects does not necessarily mean we must agree and accept those values. Getting to know someone before building opinions or beliefs solely based on their culture is essential.
2 Cultural conceptualization or distress- Cultural connections of distress are best described as the cultural factors that might hinder a person from understanding or effectively communicating. Commonly, people derived from different cultures utilize different forms of communication. Often, people who don't understand the same language or share the same cultural customs might have trouble effectively communicating with others. In today's society, we are trying to get away from people shying away from communication-based on cultural differences. "African Americans who maintain a strong ethnic identity are identified as individuals. Who derive from a dominant culture and beloved to endorse traditional beliefs and customs." (Beidel, D. C., & Frueh, B. C. (2018), Pg 134). We can't always go based on cultural conceptions; sometimes, we must learn about and communicate with others to form our opinions.
3. Psychosocial stressors and cultural features of vulnerability and resilience- psychosocial stressors help to depict the integral stressors and supports in the social environments. We begin analyzing the level of functioning skills the individuals have based on their age and cultural background. Characterizing a person's functioning abilities based on their cultural reference group can present many unanswered questions and inaccurate information.
4. Cultural features of the relationship between the individual and the clinician- Cultural features are an aspect that many of us endure daily. Many people grow up in different backgrounds and possess diverse cultural beliefs. Just because we may have language differences, we still need to find a way to actively and effectively communicate with each other. It's very frustrating at times that some individuals choose to not work with or associate with another person because their culture is different. That's what helps us learn, taking bits and pieces of all cultures and helping us become better all-around people. We can't continue to allow cultural differences to stop us from working with or learning about another individual. For example, a doctor may have to help a patient who speaks an entirely different language, but just because they have cultural differences does not mean they don't deserve the best care possible.
- Discuss the 1 criterion you believe is the most important for understanding how a client's presenting issue affects them and why.
I think the most crucial criterion would be Cultural features because I often see many people mistreated and misunderstood because of their league or cultural backgrounds. Everyone should be treated fairly regardless of race, color, or creed. It's unfair for people from different locations or who speak diverse languages to be treated differently.
In your opinion, what would be the consequence(s) of ignoring an individual's cultural customs and beliefs when conducting a comprehensive assessment of their presenting issue?
In my opinion, ignoring individuals' cultural customs could present many different problems. Part of trying to help individuals is respecting their cultural beliefs; if they feel like their values are being ignored, they might feel reluctant and receptive to the help. It's also a severe ethical violation to dismiss a person's cultural customs. We must always respect other people's values, or we can't expect to help others accurately.
