Question:
1. What resonated with me most from the film "Not Just a Game" was the inspiring story of Pat Tillman who was making millions of dollars playing in the National football league and then decided to commit a very selfless act and serve his country in the military. This resonates with me so much because I have known of Pat Tillmans story for a while and every time that i read or watch a video about it, i am inspired and almost brought to tears from his heroic actions. My older brother is also a US army airborne ranger in the 10th mountain division so this I really love stories like this one.
2. When Zirin makes the argument that sports are political, he means that the actions of the players, coaches and whoever else affiliated with the league are having a significant impact on the audience that goes deeper then just a normal televised sporting event. There are countless examples of this including kneeling during the national anthem, Muhammad Ali refusing the draft, players coming out as openly gay athletes and many more. No matter how hard people try, politics seems to always find its way into the world of sports.
3. An example that Zirin used which resonated with me a-lot was the militarization of sports and how that we have seen it so much that no one even questions it since it has become so normal. He explains how this is shown with veterans always being honored before games or veterans doing the coin toss before football games. I also think a great example was when he used the clip of Kellen Winslow when hes saying that football was a "war" and that when he goes out on the field hes ready to "kill". He also claims himself as a solider and this shows the militarization and masculinity of sports.
4. In the video and the article, both Zirin and Lipsyte address the connection of masculinity and sports. Men never want to show weakness or show any type of emotion especially when it pertains to sports because this can affect the performance of the player negatively. These values are shared in both the article and video.
