A cloud layer is 2.34 km deep and is made up of 0.48 ice crystals cm -3
Question:
A cloud layer is 2.34 km deep and is made up of 0.48 ice crystals cm-3. The density of ice = 915 kg m-3
a) Assuming all the ice crystals are identical columns with a length of 11.4 μm and a "width" of 8.8 μm find the volume of each crystal
b) What would be the radius of a spherical ice crystal with this volume?
c) Find the mass of ice crystals in each m3 of the cloud.
d) Assuming there is Mie scattering of visible radiation and the scattering efficiency is 2.0 find the volume scattering coefficient of the cloud assuming spherical ice crystals of the same volume.
e) If the absorption efficiency for shortwave radiation is 0.075, find the volume absorption coefficient of the cloud.
f) If the solar elevation angle is 37° and the insolation at cloud top is 793 W m-2. Using the answers to (d) and (e) find the amount of energy scattered by the cloud, absorbed by the cloud and, hence, the amount transmitted by the cloud.
g) Would you expect to be able to see a halo under these conditions?
