Question:
A college requires that all computers connected to the campus network be running up- to-date antivirus software. When a student’s computer is discovered to have a virus, its network connection is cut until a staff member can remove the virus. If it turns out that the computer was not running up-to-date antivirus software, the student is fined $100. Using one of the four ethical theories discussed in class (Act Utilitarianism, Social Contract Theory, Rule Utilitarianism, Kantianism) is this a morally justifiable policy?
2)Before offering a job candidate a position, some potential employers do a social media background check on the candidate (i.e. they review all the candidate’s social media accounts and posts). List five advantages and five disadvantages of this practice including ethical implications (if any).
3)Find an example of reliability and/or security errors (data, software, or system as discussed in Lecture 10) either from a news report or an incident that happened to you personally.
Briefly describe the incident in your own words, the impact (financial, inconvenience, reputation, etc.), who is “morally responsible” for the error and suggestions for how it could be avoided. Follow the pattern of evaluation given in class.
