A lung cancer patient has a number of metastatic lesions in the brain. One option is to irradiate the whole brain to a dose of 50 Gy given in 25 fractions. (a) Calculate the biologically effective dose (BED) assuming a/ß = 10 (3 points). (b) Another option is to treat the patient with the Gamma Knife. In this case, the entire dose is given in a single fraction. In order to achieve the same BED as determined in (a), calculate the dose that should be given (7 points).
