Question:
A study was published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in July 2022 that evaluated the
cannabinoid content (CBD and THC) and label accuracy of topical cannabinoid products purchased both retail and online.
From the sample of 89 CBD products listing the total amount of CBD in milligrams on their label, gas chromatography-mass
spectrometry testing was done to determine the actual amount of CBD in the products. Products that contained within 10%
of the total amount of CBD as stated on the label, were determined to be labeled accurately. Products that contained a total
amount of CBD greater than 10% of the labeled amount, were considered under labeled and products that contained a total
amount of CBD less than 10% of the labeled amount, were considered over labeled. The data is presented in the following
table:
Lotion Cream Balm Salve Patch Other Total
Under-labeled 9 16 6 3 6 12 52
Over-labeled 3 4 5 2 0 2 16
Accurately
labeled
0 9 3 3 4 2 21
Total 12 29 14 8 10 16 89
