Air flowing at a constant mass flow rate of 300 lbm/hr is heated from 75°F to 200°F. The heating is accomplished in a vertical heat exchanger of constant cross- sectional area. The exchanger is 12 ft long. The pressure of the air stream entering at the bottom of the heat exchanger is 20 psia and 3 psia pressure drop occurs through the apparatus because of fluid friction. The average velocity of the inlet air is 15 ft/s. Assume the air to behave as an ideal gas and to have a value of Cp as 0.24 Btu/lbm.°F. Determine (a) the diameter of the pipe and (b) the reaction force exerted on the pipe. Air flowing at a constant mass flow rate of 300 lbm/hr is heated from 75°F to 200°F.
