Question:
An example of denial of responsibility in the responses from the deviance questionnaire is number nine where the 18-year-old female drove while intoxicated. From the book there are two examples of quotes that go along with denial of responsibility and those are "I didn't mean to do it" or "I'm sick." The quote used in this scenario was "I felt sick to my stomach and stupid for doing it." They then provide their reasoning for doing it. This response is considered denial of responsibility because the person tried to justify why they did what they did.
An example of denial of injury and/or denial of victim would be number three where the 20-year-old male is smoking marijuana. i say this because he says that it is not harmful or addictive which denies possible injury.
An example of condemning the condemners would be number two where the 20-year-old female cheated on a test. In this scenario she said, "In some way or another, everyone probably has cheated on an exam, so I don't feel bad doing the same." In the book the quote that went along with condemning the condemners is "Everybody does it." That was exactly what she said.
An example of appealing to higher loyalties would be number five where the 18-year-old female smokes marijuana because all of her friends were trying it. They figured it would be something fun to do because people they knew were doing it.
I think the techniques of neutralization could be applied to serious crimes, but it would not provide a full explanation. I believe they could be applied but they should not. I say that because the book states that "the theory is useful in explaining how crime is maintained or continued but not how it originates."
