AutoZone had landed several new contracts that required a lot of additional manpower. In the last six weeks the company had to hire seventy new employees and another three hundred more in a year. Its HR department is itself understaffed to manage such a huge staffing process. Hence AutoZone decided to hire a new HR staffing Officer to hire and manage the new employees. Their HR manager Rhonda Thomas is quick to appoint Georgia as the new Staffing officer. This is where it all went wrong for AutoZone. Rhonda Thomas was too quick to appoint Georgia for the position without even following the basic HR procedure expected to fill a position and she proved to be the wrong person for the job. The appointment was made under the assumption that she'll be able to do a good job as she was already working at a call centre as their Staffing officer. The implications of that one bad hiring decision were grave for the company. Within a few short months, the company began receiving resignations from some star employees, the morale of the staff who remained decreased and the costs of recruiting new employees skyrocketed. A. Explain TWO reasons why proper recruiting of employees for vacant positions in an organization is important (4 marks) B. The case highlighted that the proper HR procedure was not followed by Rhonda when she selected Georgia for the position. You have been selected as head of a team by management to investigate what is happening in the HR department and to devise a plan of action to prevent a recurrence of the situation. i) Outline clearly the steps in the recruitment process that Rhonda as HR manager will be expected to follow going forward when deciding on a potential candidate for vacant positions at AutoZone (10 marks) ii) Based on information from the case, highlight to Rhonda TWO (2) negative implications that the company will face if the proper recruitment procedures are not followed. (2 marks) C. The use of an unstructured interview could be a potentially good method of identifying the best candidate for the position of Staffing Officer at AutoZone i) What is an unstructured interview? ii) State TWO (2) disadvantages of conducting unstructured interviews.
