Blood pressure is measured with the aid of digital sphygmomanometers. Obtain one of these devices and have your lab partner take your blood pressure by following the instruction booklet. Systolic pressure is the force with which the blood pushes against the artery walls when the ventricles are contracting. This number on average for adults is 120. Greater than 160 would be considered high. Diastolic pressure is the force of the blood when the ventricles are relaxed. Diastolic pressure gives valuable information about resistance (clogging) of the blood vessels. This number on average is 80 for adults. Greater than 90 would be considered high. What is your blood pressure?/12/80 Name several factors that could cause high blood pressure. Name several ways that a person could reduce their blood pressure. The circulation of blood can be observed in the tail fins of goldfish. To see blood flow, place a goldfish in the bottom of a glass dish filled with a thin layer of water. Place a wet pad of cotton over the gills and body so that only the tail is exposed and lies flat on the bottom of the dish. Place the fish under a dissecting microscope, turn on the bottom light (the one that illuminates the frosted glass at the base of the microscope) and focus in on the tail fins. Draw what you observe in the box below (indicate with arrows direction of blood flow). Include the following labels on your drawing: red blood cells, arterioles, and venules.
