Question:
This is Michael's first counseling position at the high school. Michael wants to use theory in his counseling group for ninth-grade boys. The primary topic is anger and how to manage it. He plans to meet with the students four times, with each session lasting about 30 minutes. In college, he was exposed to many different theories and approaches for working individually with students, but he learned little about how to apply theories in small groups. Michael mostly uses motivational interviewing and solution-focused counseling with individuals, but he is not sure if that's a good approach for this group.
What theory would you suggest that Michael use and why? In your response, discuss different ways you would suggest Michael use theories in this group. Be sure to also address the need for Michael to use more than one theory in his group.
