Several examples of methods for improving healthcare have been presented but are yet to be adopted. There is overwhelming evidence that instituting the biopsychosocial model in medicine leads to improved healthcare, yet little progress has been made in that direction. In some respects, the response to the Covid-19 pandemic followed the biopsychosocial model. In what ways were biological, psychological, and social factors incorporated into the response? How successful were these methods?
My (the student) Discussion Answer :
As discussed in the article "The Need for a New Medical Model: A Challenge for Biomedicine," there is a limitation in the traditional medical model and the need to propose a new, more comprehensive model that takes into account the psychological, social, and environmental factors that are known to impact health. However, the article does discuss the need for a biopsychosocial model in healthcare and presents evidence for its effectiveness.
The biopsychosocial model of medicine applied to the COVID-19 pandemic incorporates biological, psychological, and social factors, including vaccination, social distancing, quarantine, and public awareness procedures. Mental health campaigns helped reduce the stigma associated with mental health and increase access to care. The biopsychosocial approach has successfully reduced the virus's spread and its impact on public health. However, there is still more that can be done to implement this model in healthcare. According to Clauw et al., psychological factors such as fear, anxiety, and stress were also considered in the response. Developing and spreading accurate health information and education to the public was also part of the response. Biological factors were incorporated into the response by focusing on the causative agent of the disease. The success of these methods can be subjectively evaluated, but it is clear that the biopsychosocial approach helped to deal with the pandemic. For example, wearing masks and social distancing when in public places to help slow the spread of the virus. In addition, COVID-19 tests were available, and mental health lines were available for those experiencing mental stress.
With that said, the success of these measures in terms of health outcomes is still an ongoing topic of discussion among the scientific community; for example, the biopsychosocial approach caused various negative impacts on people's psychological and social well-being, negatively affecting family stability in the short and medium term. According to Ali Jadoo, S.A. (2020), social factors were incorporated into the response by imposing severe lockdowns restricting people's movement and activities. This led to panic and a focus on basic needs such as food and healthcare for oneself and one's family. Psychological factors were also incorporated into the response, as the isolation and prevention of social interaction significantly impacted people's mental health, leading to an increase in depression, anxiety, and domestic violence.
