Chris and Mike are members of the Richmond chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. This Easter, April
Question:
Chris and Mike are members of the Richmond chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. This Easter, April 17, 2022, they have decided to bomb a black church in downtown Richmond. Chris and Mike meet at Chris's house to plan the attack. As they plan the attack, they keep careful notes on possible targets, materials needed to construct the bomb, and other matters involved in carrying out a terrorist attack. Officer Alonzo Harris is an African-American police officer with the Richmond police department. He is well aware that Chris and Mike are members of the KKK, and he has had many heated altercations with them in the past during their frequent marches around the City of Richmond where they wear Klan robes and hold signs displaying hateful speech directed at blacks. Officer Harris's former police partner, Jake Hoyt, is white and has recently been working undercover in the Richmond KKK chapter. One morning while the two grab a cup of coffee, Officer Hoyt tells Officer Harris, "I heard a rumor that those idiots, Chris and Mike, are planning some sort of Easter surprise. I don't know what, but I'll let you know when I hear something." This unsettles Officer Harris. Later that day, he runs into Mike and Chris who, as they often do, are marching down Main Street holding signs that say "White Power." Officer Harris is ignoring them as he walks around them, when Chris calls out to him using insults and racial epithets, saying "We've had enough marching and protests, and are planning something. We are finally going to take meaningful action to restore white America." Officer Harris keeps his cool. "What are you planning?" he asks. Chris and Mike don't answer, but instead just nastily leer at him. This conversation, in conjunction with Officer Hoyt's information, causes Officer Harris to suspect Chris and Mike of planning something illegal and possibly violent. He goes to Chris's house. No one is home, but the door is unlocked so he enters and, as soon as he steps inside, sees the notes of the bombing Chris and Mike are planning in plain view on the kitchen table along with some explosives being used to construct the bomb. Officer Harris picks up the notes and starts reading. The notes are highly incriminating and link both Chris and Mike to the terrorist conspiracy. Officer Harris takes the materials to a magistrate who issues a search warrant for the homes of Chris and Mike as well as a warrant for their arrest. Chris and Mike are arrested and Mirandized, but still give a full confession. Their case goes to trial where the prosecutor tries to get the evidence found inside the house admitted into evidence, while the defense attorney tries to keep the evidence out of court.
