Components of sustainable competitive advantage. Firms can use their resources to create and sustain a competitive advantage, that is, to provide greater value for customers than competitors can. A competitive advantage becomes sustainable when other companies cannot duplicate the benefits it provides. Four conditions must be met if a firm's resources are to be used to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage.
