Consider animals that do simple gliding and for which maximizing time aloft (rather than distance gained) is what matters. While a monarch butterfly does as well as a vulture, really small insects don't seem to make much use of the scheme. What might set the lower limit of practicality for simple gliding in insects-if the decreasing lift per unit drag is offset by decreasing weight per unit lift?
