But suppose the nodes are totally ordered. E.g., if the nodes are integers 1,2,..., n or they are alphabetic a,b,c,..., z, then there is an obvious ordering of the nodes. Whenever your algorithm has a choice about which node to output, you must output the one that is the least in this node ordering. This results in a unique topological sort that we call "canonical".
