Consider the following statistical study: Do new mothers have a special power to detect their own baby? Students interested in investigating this question conducted an experiment involving new mothers at a local hospital. The students recruited a group of new mothers to participate in a simple experiment. Each mother was blindfolded, presented the hands of five babies - her baby and four other babies - in a random order, and then asked to identify which baby she thought was hers. The students kept track of the fraction of mothers who were able to detect their babies. In the group of 36 mothers, 9 were able to detect their own baby. The students analyzed the results of the experiment and concluded that new mothers did not have a special ability to detect their own babies. The students stated that the fraction of new mothers who successfully identified their baby while blindfolded was not large enough to rule out the possibility that mothers were identifying their baby correctly solely due to chance. Identify the four steps of the statistical analysis process: 1. Ask a question that can be answered by collecting data. 2. Decide what to measure and then collect data. 3. Summarize and analyze the data. 4. Draw a conclusion and communicate the results. Be sure to label each step with the appropriate number.
