Question:
Consider the molecules CO, CO+, and CO-.
a) Write the electron configuration for each.
b) Determine the term symbols for each. Assume a filling order parallel to N2.
c) Repeat part (b) assuming a filling order parallel to O2.
d) Using the N2 filling order:
i) Determine the term symbols for the first excited state of CO (ie a sigma -> pi* transition)
ii) Repeat this for a pi -> pi* generated excited state.
iii) Order the term symbols obtained in (i) and (ii) according to Hund's rule.
e) Write the wave functions for the states obtained in parts (b) and (c).
