Decathlon is a French sporting goods retailer founded by Michel Leclercq in 1979. For more than 40 years, the company has been designing, manufacturing, and offering the best gear at the best prices for more than 80 sports. Currently the company has over 1655 stores in 65 countries. Decathlon is considered the destination store to find the latest in sports equipment. Decathlon takes the welfare and safety of their employees very seriously. Although retail is a safe job compared to manufacturing, there are still numerous ways that employees can get hurt on the job. For example, employees can be injured by falling off ladders while changing displays, incorrectly using boxcutters to open packages, not following correct procedures in carrying heavy equipment or while showing customers how to use the various gears and equipment they have in store. Decathlon wants to reduce safety related incidents by improving employee knowledge of safe practices, providing consistent safety trainings across departments and stores, and encouraging employees to call out their peers' unsafe work behaviors and practices. Decathlon currently uses a combination of approaches for increasing employees' safety awareness, including posting safety messages in break areas, providing classroom training and holding pre-shift meetings. But several incidents led to Decathlon believing that employees are not getting a consistent safety message. There is doubt that employees really understand safety practices and how to apply them while they are working. Decathlon is looking for a training approach that (1) can be completed by employees during their work hours without taking them off of the retail floor, (2) appeals to a diverse, multigenerational workforce, and (3) is flexible enough so that it can be customized to address the unique safety challenges that Decathlon stores have. You are a store manager at Decathlon, and the management has ordered you to conduct a Needs Assessment to identify the types of safety knowledge, skills, and attitude that employees must have.
