Design the structural system of a timber pedestrian bridge. The bridge must have trusses as the main load bearing system with at least 40 ft span. You can use trusses or beams in the transverse direction. Please pay attention to the hierarchy between the structural members (beams and trusses) and to layout of the beams and trusses (the load flow from/between). Your sketches or submission drawings should also cover load transfer between the relevant structural members. By using LRFD method, you should design a structural layout comprised of trusses, beams and/or joists. You should specify the structural members clearly in your drawings and depict them in your calculations. Tributary areas of each structural member should clearly be depicted in your drawings. Your calculations should cover at least two beams (one of them may be joist) one whole truss and one column. Please pick the members with the most critical loads to design. When you are submitting your work, make sure you indicate the parts that you used in your calculations on your drawings. Take the live loads 30 psf and dead loads as 10 psf. Take Fb as 1,000 psi and Fv as 100 psi. E should be 1,200,000 psi. You can use your charts to select the appropriate sections.
