The organization I have chosen is “Microsoft”
1. Since you will need to gather and analyze real data, it is critical that you have access to verifiable data sources for the company you choose.
- Explain why you have selected the organization
- What challenges or opportunities is it facing right now?
- What important changes are going on in the sector?
- What issues are you most excited about exploring?
2. Identify a specific problem or opportunity that can best be addressed through the analysis of data. Your "problem/area of opportunity" could fall into any functional area in business: leadership, people management, finance, operations, marketing, etc. The choice is yours, but the opportunity you identify must be a "significant" one, worthy of the attention of the CEO and the Board of Directors. In addition, you will need data to substantiate your recommendation.
- What sort of data should you gather and analyze to accurately assess the problem or opportunity?
- Is it sales data, demographic data, product performance data, or another type of data?
- Explain why this type of data is needed for this particular problem or opportunity.
- How will you obtain this data?
- What is your hypothesis (prediction) of what the data will tell you?
3. Share your experiences (both successes and challenges) in gathering and reviewing the data identified in discussion question 1 and 2.
- What sources did you use to gather your data?
- How did you organize and save your data?
- Where did you run into roadblocks?
- What data do you wish you could find, but were unable to?
- What impact will any gaps in your data have on the validity of your analysis?
- What advice do you have for others who might be seeking similar data?
4. In your discussion question 2 above, you were asked to predict what the data might tell you about the problem/opportunity you identified.
- Did your analysis of the data confirm or refute your hypothesis? Explain.
- Which data analysis tools listed above was most useful in analyzing the data you gathered? Explain.
- How will you organize and share your data so that the story it tells is clear and compelling?
- What types of visual graphics will be used to present data and why?
5. Based on your analysis, as a CEO seeking to increase the competitive strength of your organization, what is the "winning move" you want to pursue and why? How important was the collection and analysis of data in guiding your decision on what your winning move should be?
