Divide students into groups of 4-5 and ask them to generate as many thoughts and ideas they have about the following groups of people: Afro-Caribbean, Indigenous, Irish, Italian, Jewish, and Latino. 

• How do these groups differ from one another? 
• What characteristics do they have in common?  What are the roles of men and women in each ethnic group? 
• Ask students to consider that there may be not one, but two or more stereotypes. 
• Have students consider how social class interacts with ethnicity - e.g., Jewish intellectuals vs. Jewish merchants and business people. 
• Encourage students to be as open and honest as possible. 
• Each group should examine their lists and determine which of their ideas constitute stereotyping. 
• To what extent do students hesitate to say what they think? 
• What makes such things hard to talk about? 
• What is needed in order to establish trust, even to open up?
