Question:
Dr. Abernathy is new to online teaching and learning and is working very hard to make a connection to his students online and wants them to like him. His experience is solely in the traditional classroom, so this has been a big learning curve for him. Dr. Abernathy has included a bio of himself in the LMS, which also included an invitation for students to join his social media site. Dr. Abernathy followed with an email encouraging all his students to join his social media site for extra points and to make comments on his posts so they can get used to online communication and form a learning community. Included on the social media site is very detailed personal information about Dr. Abernathy's hobbies, his likes and dislikes, how many times he has been married, places he likes to go to visit, articles he has written; and a variety of pictures of him swimming, on a date, and at a drinking party with friends. Ms. Field, a long-time colleague of Dr. Abernathy found out he had a social media site and thought it would be fun to be a part of the group and asked to join. Dr. Abernathy gladly accepted Ms. Field's request to join.
When Ms. Field entered the social media site, she noticed right away this was Dr. Abernathy's personal site and not a private group site. She was concerned about some of the personal information and pictures that were shared on the site and the responses students were posting. Unsure of what to do, Ms. Field went to the HR department of the school to report the instructor because of her responsibility to students, the responsibility of being an instructor, and what she thought was unprofessional conduct. She was also concerned that students may start to post information unrelated to the class.
