English 202 Assignments 6&8: Assigned: Asnmt. 6 Workshop: Due for Grade: Asnmt. 8 Workshop: Due for Grade: Proposal and Final Project Tuesday, October 18 Thursday, November 10 Tuesday, November 15 Thursday, December 1 Thursday, December 8 Assignment 6: Please write a two-page, single-spaced informal proposal in the form of a memorandum. We will review the memorandum style in class. (Date:, To:, From:, Subject:; Flush left, two line spaces between paragraphs, etc.). Use subheads for each section of the proposal. Your proposal is for the project that will be your assignment 8. If you are going to do a marketing plan for a new business for our assignment 8, for this assignment I would like you to discuss the "General Business Case." What is the "market need" you see your business addressing? "I've always thought there's a need for after-school golf instruction in Bridgeport," or "I want to open an organic pet-treat bakery," or "I want to create 'roots-finding' vacation experiences for groups of Americans of different ethnic backgrounds." Your proposal is to do a market-feasibility study (Assignment 8). The other option is to propose an academic research-style project. For this, the topic is wide open. It can be a paper about your field of study; it can be a preliminary "working paper" in preparation for a senior-thesis paper. This assignment would clearly and concisely lay out what it is you wish to explore for your final project, laying out the research question you are asking as well as the resources (secondary research sources and/or primary research techniques) you will use. Assignment 8: For those who propose a "business" project for assignment 8, your final project will be the market study you proposed: How big is the potential market? How much buying power does it have? Are there competitors out there providing your proposed product/service or a similar product or service? Can you provide this product/service cheaper, and if so how? Can you provide better quality, or a better customer experience, and if so how? Can you use technology in a new or unique way? The final product for such a market plan should be approximately five-six (5-6) pages, single- spaced and flush left, with subheadings for each portion of the discussion. For those who propose an academic research-style project, assignment 8 will be that study. The final product for such an academic paper should be approximately ten-twelve (10-12) pages, double- spaced, with indented paragraphs. You may use subheads to separate portions of the narrative, but it is not necessary. A detailed set of instructions about proper formatting of assignment 8 will be issued.
