Extra Credit Bantu siderosis is a condition characterized by high levels of serum ferritin (iron) in the blood and occurs primarily in Sub-Saharan African populations. It is thought to be caused by consumption of a specific home-made beer popular in this geographic area. To study this association, the following study is proposed. 500 cases are chosen from a local hospital and the researchers match at controls to the cases at a 1:3 ratio. After investigating whether their participants consumed the beverage or not, they found that 400 people who had Bantu siderosis consumed the drink.
